Steering through Chaos

steering-through-chaos

Transition is one thing any church will go through as you grow.  I recently read a great book titled Steering Through Chaos.  The book is written by Scott Wilson who is the Lead Pastor of The Oaks in Dallas, TX.  It is a book that really outlines how to navigate through all the different things a church can face.

Scott really addresses how we as leaders should respond to transitions and the uncomfortable place that change brings.  It really resonated with our church that while your church is in transition it is important how and when leaders communicate.  It really determines how we will make it through the transition.  I really like how Scott coaches pastors on how to take on different aspects of opportunities and avoiding obstacles.

All around this book is a must read for every leader.  No matter where you are, you can be sure your church will go through transitions.  The principles will help you develop your map for transition.  I highly recommend it!

eli sleeps…and eli, ugghhh, eats

This is a picture Mundo sent from Amsterdam. It’s the name of a clothing store in his favorite place in Amsterdam- the Dam Square

First, I have to fill you in on Eli’s amazing night of sleep. For our first night without Mundo, I must say things went quite well-actually, records were set! Eli slept…are you ready for this?…11.5 hours straight! That’s the longest he’s ever slept without waking up during the night. As many new moms will tell you, on those first few nights when your baby decides to sleep through the night you’re up all night long waiting for them to wake up (and checking on them to make sure they’re breathing!). So, needless to say, I woke up at 3:30, waiting to hear sweet little cries and it was quiet. So, I laid there, expecting him to wake up the minute I fell asleep. I dozed for about an hour and then woke up again at about 5:00. I’m still breastfeeding, so, I was quite uncomfortable and quite ready to feed my little boy. However, I kept thinking, “How interesting that I’ve been waiting anxiously for this to happen and when it does, a little discomfort is causing me to want to back track and have him wake up again!” I realized that this can often be an analogy for seasons in life when we’re believing God to do a miracle in our lives, but we’re not willing to make the sacrifices/pay the price to see the miracle come to pass. The reality is, my body will adjust to him sleeping through the night and I won’t be as uncomfortable with time. However, in this initial season, I will have to be willing to endure a little discomfort. Man, I will be glad when the season of rest comes and I get to sleep through the night for the first time in nine months! (okay, so I understood that babies might take a while to sleep through the night, but I didn’t realize that I wouldn’t be sleeping through the night either :) ) Eli is most definitely worth the sacrifice of sleep!

On another note…I am in love with technology these days. Mundo and I were able to video chat this morning on Skype. It was so much fun to see Eli jumping around and smiling at his daddy. He loved every minute of it! Mundo was even able to show me the view outside of his hotel room. I felt like I was there with him! They are doing great and are hopefully still sleeping right now. They are 7 hours ahead of us. They will spend their Tuesday hanging out in Amsterdam, touring the city before they head to Johannesburg, South Africa, on Wednesday. I miss him, but I’m so thankful for the opportunity he has to go such an awesome trip with two amazing men of God. Eli and I were invited to a friend’s house for dinner and really enjoyed spending time with their family- (thanks Pete and Kristi for a great dinner!) It’s always a blessing to have great friends around you who are your extended family.

Okay…so you may be wondering what Eli ate…Eli was playing on the floor in our kitchen this afternoon while I was cleaning up. I decided I wanted to take a walk, so I left him there to play while I ran and got the stroller out of the car and set up. Let me back up just a minute…at the grocery store today I bought him those fun little Gerber baby star cereal thingys that are great as a baby’s first finger food. I gave him some at lunch and SO enjoyed watching him pick them up off his tray and eat them (I had no idea he had mastered this skill already!) So, I had basically spent his lunch time teaching him how to pick up little things and put them in his mouth…back to the story… As I walked in the garage, I immediately had a thought pop into my mind, “The dog food!” Our rat terrier, Dulce, still hadn’t finished her food, so I knew her bowl was full. I ran into the kitchen as fast as I could and, sure enough, Eli had crawled over to her bowl and had a handful of dog food! I whisked him up and took the food out of his hands. After washing both of our hands, I fished around in his mouth, but didn’t feel anything. I held him in front of me and started sniffing his mouth. He smiled at me with the biggest, cutest, almost toothiest grin ever. I kept sniffing and he kept smiling. Then, all of a sudden, a piece of dog food came drooling out of his big smile!!! I freaked, of course, and ran to the sink to wash out his mouth. The moral of the story: crawling babies and dog food don’t mix!

more mojo

Fall is almost here and we are kicking into full gear at our church.  On August 2 we launch another service with our friend Christine Caine from Hillsong Church in Sydney.  It will be on Saturday nights at 5p.  Man is it going to be slamming.  We did a Saturday night service this past Easter and it was the best service of the weekend.  This will bring us to 5 weekend services.  Here is the crazy thing, one year ago at this time we only had 2 weekend services.  Now between our two campuses we go up to five.  What a wild ride.  Today we spent a lot of time discussing about international missions opportunities with Daniel Batchelder, president of an organization called Morning Star Development.  Morning Star Development does a lot of work in Afghanistan, a country where there are only about 10,000 believers.  Pretty amazing opportunties to minister to the unreached.  Our church started an organization called Go Global a couple of months ago to help get more people on the mission field in partnership with other local churches.  Man, what an awesome season for the body of Christ.  I’m pumped to be serving under pastors with vision.  God is good.  We’re busting into Fall in style.  Bring on some more Holy Spirit mojo!

Amazed…….

Church today was amazing! During worship we sang a song in which the chorus was “Lord I’m amazed, by you….how you loved me”. I am amazed how much God loves us and all that He has for us. We received our miracle offering today for all that we are believing God for in 2008 as families and as a church. Our pastor always says that God will do His part in our life, but we must do our part. Today we did our part in resourcing the kingdom of God. Now we wait for Him to do great things. As we are amazed by what God has done, we can’t stop being amazed and expecting God to do more amazing things in our life. When we receive a harvest or blessing in our life it is because of what we sowed in the past. Well today we sowed our best in our miracle offering so that in the days to come we will continue to be amazed at all that God is doing. Amanda and I are believing God for strong children who love God and great things for our future together. We are sowing our lives, our energy, our money, ….all that we are for God. I’m amazed that God allows us to participate in all that He is doing in the world today. Are you amazed?

GOd

globe turtle

In college I heard someone once say, “two-thirds of God’s name is GO!” so we must GO. “GO” refers to the commandment that Jesus gave His followers to take his message of love and life to all the nations of the world (Matthew 28:18-19)

This past weekend we had the treat of hosting a world class missionary named Fred Markert at our church. It was a blast! Fred leads YWAM’s Network for Strategic Initiatives, which identifies and coordinates long-term projects for YWAM bases, missions organizations and churches worldwide. We were absolutely blown away by all the things he shared with us. There is so much we must do as a church in the next 15-18 years to reach the world. He challenged us to be a GOing church, a sending center. This is something that has always been in the heart of our pastor and still is. This time with Fred fueled the fire for the world even more.

The core of the unreached people of our world live in window that extends from W. Africa to East Asia. This region of the world has become known as the 10/40 window. Incredibly, 97% of the least evangelized peoples live in the 10/40 window. Every one of us must play a part of this GOing. We can do it either by Sending or physically Going ourselves. We have the greatest mission on earth.

10/40 window

Fred shared with us that there are six areas that are key for us to target as the “Church”. These 6 areas include some countries/regions in the 10/40 window and some other strategic areas. The six areas are:

1. Northern India & Himalayas (Nepal/Tibet)
2. Northern Africa (above the “Sahel Line”)
3. The Eastern Seaboard of China
4. Central Asia (all the “…stans”, ie. Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan…)
5. Europe (specifically Germany)
6. Iran

We are called to reach every nation, tribe, and tongue. Together we can do it, but we must be strategic in how we do it.

After this I looked and there before me was a great multitude that no one could count, from every nation, tribe, people and language, standing before the throne and in front of the Lamb.  -Revelation 7:9
